Island Health reports one COVID-19 death, 133 new cases over weekend

The province reported 16 new COVID-19 related deaths over the weekend — including one in Island Health — pushing the death toll to more than 1,800 since the beginning of the pandemic. There were 1,711 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C.

The province reported 16 new COVID-19 related deaths over the weekend — including one in Island Health — pushing the death toll to more than 1,800 since the beginning of the pandemic.

There were 1,711 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. in the past three days, including 133 in Island Health. Of those, 768 were Interior Health, where regional restrictions on gatherings and a mask mandate were introduced last week.

There are now 5,056 active cases in the province — including 401 in Island Health — and 133 people in hospital, of whom 80 are in intensive care. The active case count is down from 6,345 on Friday.

Sixteen additional COVID-related deaths were reported, for total to date of 1,801. All but two were in the Interior Health region.

The death in Island Health brings the total in the region to 43.

As of Monday, 74 per cent of eligible people 12 and older were fully immunized.

From Aug. 10 to 17, unvaccinated people accounted for 71 per cent of new COVID-19 cases, partially vaccinated accounted for 16 per cent and fully vaccinated accounted for 13 per cent.

The large majority of COVID-19 hospitalizations, 84 per cent, are unvaccinated people. Five per cent of people in hospital with the virus were partially vaccinated and 11 per cent were fully vaccinated.

Of the nine people in hospital with COVID-19 in Island Health last week, two were fully vaccinated and seven were unvaccinated. Five of the unvaccinated people were in intensive care.

There were 13 active outbreaks in long-term care and assisted and independent living as of Monday, none of which are in Island Health.
