Saanich’s Interurban Rail Trail has reopened after crews cleaned up a sewage spill.

Sewage spilled from a nearby pump station late Friday. The affected area stretched from Interurban Avenue to Hartland Avenue, near the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. People were asked to avoid the area as crews cleaned up.

The pump station is part of the line that transports residual solids from the McLoughlin Point wastewater treatment plant to the treatment facility at the Hartland landfill.

The Capital Regional District said the sewage spill was the result of a failure of the pumping system. It said the system has returned to normal.
