An impaired driver crashed into a power pole in Colwood early Monday with enough force to take the pole off its foundation, cutting power to nearby residents for several hours.

West Shore RCMP said they received numerous complaints about 1:40 a.m. from witnesses who heard a loud crash in the area of Sooke Road and Marty Lane, followed by a power outage.

Officers responded and found a significantly damaged 2004 Nissan 350Z driven by a 27-year-old Vancouver resident.

The driver, who did not have any major injuries, was detained for an impaired driving investigation and charges are expected, police said.

The 22-year-old male passenger was thrown from the vehicle and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to recover.

More than 3,500 homes were without power for about seven hours as a result of the crash.
