Day and night lane closures on Highway 1 in Langford began Sunday as crews started work to widen the road.

The construction between Leigh Road interchange and West Shore Parkway will bring the highway from three lanes to four with median barrier separation and improved roadside protections.

Work is expected to continue through 2020.

Lane closures have been planned to lessen the impact to drivers during peak traffic times. From 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday to Friday, southbound lanes will remain open for morning rush hour traffic. Between 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, northbound lanes will remain open.

Drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes and intermittent stoppages outside of peak periods during the construction project. From Sunday night to Friday morning, construction will close a southbound lane in off-peak traffic times, and drivers can expect a northbound crossover.

Periodic short stoppages daily in the morning and evening will allow crews to clear trees and prepare for rock blasting, which is expected to begin in November.

Construction work is not planned during weekends at this time, although this may change.

Drivers are advised to use caution, slow to 60 kilometres per hour in the construction zone and follow the directions of traffic control personnel.
