Saanich seniors interested in growing their own vegetables this summer can access free plant starts Sunday at Madrona Farm.
The farm, owned by Nathalie and David Chambers, is giving away plant starts, including peas, cucumbers, zucchini, green onions, lettuce, kale and sunflowers through a program called Seedlings for Saanich Seniors. The plants are grown by Sol Kinnis from City’s Edge Farm and will be distributed at the Madrona Farm at 4317 Blenkinsop Rd. on Sunday.
Seniors interested in receiving plant starts can fill out a request form at www.growingfood-together.com.
The initiative is spearheaded by Nathalie Chambers, who is also a Saanich councillor, and funded by an anonymous donor to support seniors wanting to grow their own food.
Seedlings for Seniors is facilitated by Growing Together, a group of organizations in the capital region dedicated to supporting people to learn to grow their own food during the pandemic.
