A 70-foot recreational boat registered in Seattle caught fire Wednesday morning near the Swartz Bay ferry terminal in North Saanich.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre said they received a call about 10 a.m. reporting a yacht on fire near Swartz Bay.

All four people on the boat escaped before rescue officials arrived.

The fire is believed to have started in the engine room.

North Saanich RCMP said they sent a police boat to assist the North Saanich fire department in containing the blaze.

The RCMP boat was used to carry firefighters as well as transport pumps out to the burning vessel.

The coast guard was also on scene with their environmental response team to help contain pollution.
