Classes were cancelled Friday at Ecole Mount Prevost after a suspicious fire — the second suspicious fire this week at a Cowichan Valley school.

The small fire happened outside the Somenos Road elementary school and burned through a wall before being quickly put out by the North Cowichan Fire Department.

A neighbour notified teachers of the fire about 7:10 a.m. North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP used fire extinguishers to control the blaze before firefighters arrived.

The school district dealt with a similar fire on Monday at Drinkwater Elementary, where a police officer on patrol noticed the fire on an exterior wall about 3:30 a.m.

“The disruption to our classes at both these schools, especially during the global pandemic, has added a level of complexity to the lives of students and staff that is truly unnecessary,” said school district chairwoman Candace Spilsbury.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP ask anyone with information on the fires to call them at 250-748-5522.
