Saanich police dealt with five separate reports of rear-end collisions on the Patricia Bay Highway Thursday.

Nine vehicles were involved in three crashes between Haliburton Road and Old East Road and traffic was backed up.

Police said all three collisions were minor. A fourth and fifth collision followed a short time later. “Confirming the roads are not icy nor is it snowing,” Saanich police said on social media, adding: “Please pay attention while driving and allow for a safe following distance.”

The incidents were in known high-congestion areas, with one involving a tractor-trailer unit, said Const. Markus Anastasiades. “It was unbelievable,” he said. “It was one after the other after the other.” — Times Colonist
