Two dogs were rescued by firefighters responding to a blaze at a two-storey home in Colwood on Tuesday afternoon.

The Colwood, Langford and View Royal departments responded to the fire, which broke out in a ground-level suite in a Windthrop Road house about 3:30 p.m. Nobody was home except two dogs. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the suite. The damage was extensive, said Colwood Fire Chief John Cassidy.

One of the dogs was unconscious and had to be revived by firefighters. Both animals were taken to a veterinarian by animal control officers. Emergency Social Services workers are helping the displaced residents. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
