One person was rescued with a ladder from a second-floor balcony when fire ripped through a Campbell River apartment building early Wednesday.

Campbell River Fire Chief Thomas Doherty said none of the 86 people who live in the apartment were injured, but two firefighters fell from the third floor to the second when the fire-damaged floor gave way beneath them. Neither suffered serious injury.

The fire began in a second-floor unit and burned its way up through the ceiling to enter the third floor, where it quickly spread.

Firefighters led two people out from the first floor, along with another from the fourth floor, as well as rescuing one person from the second-floor balcony. The remaining residents left the building by themselves.
