West Shore RCMP and Colwood Fire Rescue are investigating a possible arson at a vacant house on Betula Drive in Colwood.
Multiple reports about the fire were received about 11:30 p.m. Monday. Neighbours told emergency crews the house was vacant and no one is believed to have been harmed in the blaze.
The fire was contained to the back of the house.
One of the neighbours used a hose to keep the blaze from growing in the current dry conditions before firefighters arrived, said West Shore RCMP Const. Meighan Massey.
“If this had caught and spread we would be dealing with a very different, possible tragic situation,” she said.
