Federal funding provided to remove derelict boats

Minister of Transport Marc Garneau announced Friday that $1,174,139 is going to the removal of 34 boats and the assessment of seven boat-removal efforts.

The largest portion of the funds is $673,504, which goes to Salish Sea Industrial Services for the removal and disposal of 19 boats in Sooke and elsewhere in the Capital Regional District.

Salish Sea Industrial Services will also remove and dispose of nine boats in Penelakut at a cost of $167,185.

The group We Are the Change for Humanity will receive $300,000 for the removal and disposal of six boats around Alert Bay and Port Hardy, and $30,000 for the assessment of six removals in the same areas.

Bowen Island Municipality will get $3,450 for one removal assessment in Mannion Bay.
