The driver who died in a two-vehicle collision on West Saanich Road on Feb. 4 crossed the centre line, which led to the head-on crash, say Saanich police, after concluding their investigation.

Christopher McNutt, 31, was in a Honda CRX and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, in a Dodge Ram pickup, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said it’s unknown why the vehicle crossed the centre line, saying they’ve ruled out speed, impairment or the use of a handheld device as factors in the crash in the 5200-block of West Saanich Road, near Prospect Lake Road.

The vehicle was found to be in good condition and a mechanical inspection turned up no issues that would explain what happened, they said.

“We want to extend our gratitude to the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as to the other driver and their family for their patience and co-operation in this investigation,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades.

“This was a tragic collision that took time to investigate and we hope this conclusion brings some closure to all involved.”
