Police has a busy long weekend as thousands of people descended on the Saanich Fair.

Central Saanich police opened 28 files from from Saturday to Monday, with nine of the incidents happening at the Saanich Fairgrounds on Stellys Cross Road.

Among them was a call for a man in medical distress who later died. The B.C. Coroner’s service is investigating the death.

Police are also investigating two “isolated” assaults at the fair’s midway. On Sunday, a 17 year-old male was assaulted by an unknown male on the carpet-slide ride. On Monday, a male in his late thirties was assaulted by another male at the midway.

Five impaired drivers were also taken off the roads, and a dog owner got away with a warning after the canine showed signs of overheating in a vehicle.

There was also a report of a missing child. Saanich Fair organizers alerted police on site after closing the gates until the child was found and returned to family members.

“Fair staff did an excellent job developing and implementing lost-child safety protocols,” Central Saanich police said in a statement.

If you have information about either of the assaults, contact Central Saanich police at 250-652-4441, or Crime Stoppers to make an anonymous report at 1-800-222-8477.
