Saanich police statistics from past years illustrate just how much excessive speeding — driving more than 40 kilometres an hour over the speed limit — has jumped during the COVID-19 pandemic.

From January to May 2020 there have been 90 excessive speeding tickets issued, with only 76 handed out in all of 2019. There were 66 in 2018, 57 in 2017, 62 in 2016 and 43 in 2015.

Having more open roads due to reduced traffic during the pandemic is thought to be a factor in the speeding trend.

The penalty for excessive speeding includea a fine of at least $368 and a seven-day vehicle impound.
