Former broadcaster Stephen Andrew is taking another stab at Victoria politics.
Andrew, who ran fourth when he challenged for the mayor’s job in 2014, has announced he is running as a member of the NewCouncil slate for a council seat.
Andrew said he received assurances that the NewCouncil candidates are independent and there is no expectation that they will be voting as a block if elected.
“I think they have one common interest … they are looking for good governance,” Andrew said.
He said his views generally align with the NewCouncil principles and working with a group can offset costs such as through group mailings.
Andrew said council should get back to governing based on three principles: Hire, fire and evaluate the chief executive officer, set policy and guard the public trust.
“If we work around the table as informed trustees of the city, I think we’re going to get a lot more work done and we’re not going to see some of the anger that we’re experiencing right now.”
