A 45-year-old Errington man died Saturday after his all-terrain vehicle went over an embankment.

The accident took place just before 3 p.m. on North West Bay Road, about 26 kilometres from Highway 19.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said the man’s friends sent an emergency message through a GPS device. Police also learned that the man had been critically injured. By the time B.C. Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene, he had died.

Police, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, and the B.C. Coroners Service confirmed the death.

The man’s friends told police that he had become separated from the group and was attempting to catch up.

“He apparently missed a turn on the trail and went over an embankment. Emergency first aid was performed but due to the injuries sustained he did not survive,” O’Brien said.

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue helped to recover the man’s body.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be contributing factors, and the coroners service will continue to investigate.
