The Liberals’ climate plan — and the party’s Victoria candidate — won an endorsement from a somewhat unexpected source Thursday: former B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver.

The University of Victoria climate scientist said the Liberals have “the only credible, science-aligned plan put forward by any party.” He pointed to measures involving carbon pricing, permanent funding for public transit, a shift to zero-emission vehicles and the phasing-out of coal by 2030. “This is a plan that reflects the urgency and scale of the crisis.”

Weaver also praised the qualifications of Nikki Macdonald, an ocean science and climate researcher who is looking to unseat incumbent Laurel Collins, the NDP’s environment and climate critic, in the Victoria riding.

Former Islander running in Halifax

A voice familiar to Vancouver Islander radio listeners is being heard on the other side of the country.

Jo-Ann Roberts is running for the Green Party in Halifax, just as she did in 2019. Prior to moving to Nova Scotia, she ran for the Greens in Victoria in 2015. Before that, she hosted CBC Radio’s All Points West from 2004-2014.

She served as the Greens’ interim leader from November 2019 to October 2020 while the party chose a successor to Elizabeth May.
