Early election signs run afoul of law, must come down

Some campaign signs for the Oct. 20 municipal election were erected too soon and have been removed by candidates. All were erected on provincial rights of way in Saanich, which ran afoul of regulations saying they couldn’t be put there until Sept.

Some campaign signs for the Oct. 20 municipal election were erected too soon and have been removed by candidates.

All were erected on provincial rights of way in Saanich, which ran afoul of regulations saying they couldn’t be put there until Sept. 22.

Once they are back on provincial rights of way, the signs must be removed by the day after the Oct. 20 vote. Candidates can be charged for removal if signs are left up too long.

Saanich mayoral candidate Fred Haynes, one of a number who had signs up improperly, said there was confusion over what was municipal and what was provincial land because of a misunderstanding with some of the mapping.

“I think most of us fell into that,” he said.

“I think it was a very simple error.”
