A wildfire burning in Taylor Flats by Sproat Lake has grown since being reported Sunday morning as 24 firefighters work to extinguish the blaze in dry conditions, Coastal Fire Centre information officer Dorthe Jakobsen said today.

The blaze has gone from about .5 hectares to 1.8 hectares, Jakobsen said.

“We have 24 firefighters out there with aviation resources if and when needed.”

Jakobsen said the fact that the fire is burning in slash is adding to the difficulty of dealing with it.

“That’s a lot of dry fuel on the ground,” she said. “Mop up is going to be challenging, particularly because of the dry conditions out there.”

Port Alberni RCMP are no longer directing traffic on nearby Highway 4. They were brought out in the initial stages as a precaution because of the fire’s proximity to the road.
