A kitchen-scraps ban, starting in 2015, is one way to extend the life of Hartland landfill in Saanich.

Educate yourself on how to decrease the amount of waste you generate through education programs offered by the Capital Regional District during Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 18 to 24.

This is the 20th anniversary of Waste Reduction Week, a national campaign that promotes innovation in waste reduction and the value of a sustainable, circular economy.

“Reduce is the first ‘R’ in pollution prevention and is the very foundation of the CRD’s new solid waste management plan,” said Barb Desjardins, environmental services committee chair for the CRD. “Reducing the region’s overall waste to 250 kg per capita by 2030 is a big undertaking that will require every one of us to find new ways to trim down what we consume in our daily lives.”

Throughout the week, the CRD will post daily social media content on key areas, including textiles, electronics, plastics and food. Residents who follow along will have the chance to win one of six $50 gift cards.

CRD staff will host two public tours of the Hartland Landfill, Nov. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration is required and participants will be required to follow public health orders. To register, go to crd.bc.ca/reduce.
