Central Saanich police have arrested a male teacher from a daycare in Saanichton after a preliminary investigation into his conduct with children in his care.

Police are investigating information received late last week related to a male teacher at the now-closed Montessori Educare Daycare at 7925 East Saanich Rd.

A search warrant was executed Monday morning at the daycare, and the man, who is in his 30s, was arrested shortly afterward. He was detained and subsequently released. No charges have been laid.

Central Saanich Police Chief Les Sylven said officers worked on the case throughout the weekend, putting together information required to obtain the search warrant. Sylven said only that the arrest and investigation are related to the man’s conduct with children at the daycare.

He said his department has been in contact with government regulators, including Island Health, and is working to support the families involved.

Sylven asked parents whose children have had contact with the man to get in touch with police, but advised parents to avoid asking their children about anything that happened at the daycare or with the teacher, saying questions need to be posed by specialists.

“As difficult as it may be, we are asking parents to refrain from asking any questions about this teacher,” said Sylven.

“This investigation requires, from our standpoint, police officers who have been trained to conduct child interviews to speak with the children. We are in the process of doing that.”

Sylven said investigations like this one require a delicate balancing act. Officers must respect the assumed innocence of any person under investigation, while at the same time protecting the community at large.

Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact Sgt. Paul Brailey at 250-652-4441 ext. 3030.
