A Saanich police bike officer found a replica Glock handgun, a folding knife and a slingshot on a cyclist he stopped for a pair of Motor Vehicle Act offences.

The incident took place July 16 on Carey Road. The officer determined the cyclist had outstanding warrants and arrested him.

The weapons-which the cyclist is banned from possessing under court conditions — were found in an ensuing search.

Const. Markus Anastasiades said police continue to come across replica firearms, particularly those that imitate ones carried by police officers. “These pose a significant risk to the general public, those that carry them and any police officer responding to a call about a person carrying one — as police are trained to treat all firearms as real until proven otherwise.”

Anastasiades said while owning an Airsoft or replica firearm is not illegal, discharging them is prohibited in the District of Saanich.
