Cycling gear, bike parts among items taken from underground parkade

Victoria police are investigating after a man broke into an underground parkade in the 1000-block of View Street and stole about $2,000 worth of property.

Police received a report Sept. 19 that a break-in had occurred overnight and a vehicle and storage locker were entered. Among the items stolen were cycling gear, bicycle wheels and tools.

Surveillance video shows a suspect following a vehicle into the parkade — a common method used by thieves.

The suspect is described as white, 30- to 40-years-old and about five-foot-1o with a slim build. He wore a dark hooded sweater, a toque and dark pants with reflective markings on the lower leg, and carried a black-and-yellow backpack.

Police said earlier this week that the number of reported break-ins involving underground parkades was up from 137 from Jan. 1 to Sept. 14 in 2019 to 194 in the same period this year. Numbers were also up for break-ins involving garages, detached sheds and storage lockers at construction sites.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Victoria police at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) .
