Island Health has declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at Tofino General Hospital after four patients tested positive for the virus.

The outbreak at Tofino’s only hospital is limited to the inpatient unit, Island Health said Tuesday. The rest of the hospital, including the emergency department, remains open.

“We would like to reassure the community that TGH remains open and ready to provide safe care,” Island Health said in an advisory. “If you require emergency care, please do not hesitate to visit the emergency room immediately.”

Outbreak precautions, including enhanced cleaning and contact tracing, have been put in place to protect the health of patients, staff and medical staff, the health authority said.
