Courtenay-Alberni NDP MP Gord Johns has been appointed the party’s critic for Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the appointment on Thursday.

Johns, elected in 2015, has been outspoken in protecting oceans. He has moved a motion on ocean plastics, fought to reverse the cancellation of a salmon program, and advocated support for emergency response and marine environment stewardship funding.

More recently, he called on the government to suspend the Salish Sea herring fishery, the only herring fishery remaining on the Pacific Coast from Oregon to Alaska.

Johns will leave his post as NDP critic of Veterans Affairs, which will be the responsibility of MP Rachel Blaney, who represents North Island-Powell River.

He will retain responsibility as critic for Small Business and Tourism.
