A husband and wife died Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on West Saanich Road, just south of Old West Saanich Road.

Central Saanich police were called about 4 p.m. to the scene near the Saanich/Central Saanich border where the vehicle had gone off the road, said Police Chief Ian Lawson, and were joined by the Central Saanich Fire Department.

Officers and firefighters unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate the driver.

The cause of the driver’s death has yet to be determined, Lawson said.

“What we don’t know is the causal factor, whether he succumbed to injuries or whether he had a medical event prior to the collision,” Lawson said. “We’re just not able to say at this point.”

The female passenger was taken to hospital but did not survive.

West Saanich Road was shut down and a collision reconstructionist was called in from Saanich police. The road was blocked for six or seven hours.
