An end-of-year camping trip for students at Nanaimo’s Departure Bay Elementary came close to being cancelled when all of the group’s nine tents were stolen.

The theft was discovered over the weekend, just before the students were scheduled to leave. Nanaimo RCMP discovered that locks to an outside fenced area had been cut to get to the items.

After news of the theft came out, word spread quickly through social media. Within hours, businesses, school staff and parents were able to find more than enough tents to save the trip.

“The theft was disheartening, but to see the community and businesses come together to right a wrong was so wonderful,” Departure Bay principal Annette Noble said in a statement.

“The students left [Monday] morning on their three-day adventure and it was smiles all around.”
