Saanich police say 18 cannabis plants were seized for disposal Monday after children came across them while using the trails in the Panama Flats area.

Const. Markus Anastasiades said the plants were still maturing. “They were not budding or flowering,” Anastasiades said.

He said the law allows people to have up to four plants, but it is not permitted to leave them unattended in a public place to grow. “You must grow them on your own property.”

Finding plants growing in a public area is “very unusual” in Saanich, Anastasiades said.

“We obviously come across people carrying personal amounts of marijuana, which is legal now.”

Anastasiades said police have no leads on how the plants got to where they were.
