A six year-old child died at a Duncan hospital on Friday night after first responders were called to an area motel following a report of an unresponsive child.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, who said in a press release they will not be identifying the child, are investigating alongside the B.C. Coroners Service. The North Cowichan Duncan General Investigation Section has taken over the investigation, with support from the Forensic Identification Section.

RCMP and B.C. Emergency Health Services were called just after 9 p.m. and attempted life-saving efforts. The child was later transported to a local hospital. Despite resuscitation attempts, the six year-old could not be saved.

Officers were at the scene of the incident Saturday and are expected to remain on site Sunday. “The North Cowichan Duncan Victim Services is engaged and are supporting the family during this difficult time,” Janelle Shoihet of the B.C. RCMP said in a statement.
