Charity fundraiser walk morphs into dance-a-thon

A charity’s signature walking fundraiser is returning as a virtual dance-a-thon due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, more than 9,000 walkers across Canada raised more than $1.9 million at the Kids Help Phone’s Walk So Kids Can Talk.

Due to social distancing and restrictions on crowd sizes, it was decided to introduce a virtual Never Dance Alone-a-thon to take the place of the annual fundraiser for Kids Help Phone. The virtual event, presented by BMO, will take place across Canada today.

Kids Help Phone provides confidential free counselling and support to more than 1,500 young people every day. Children can call a counsellor or text a trained volunteer crisis responder for guidance at any time.

Calls to the Kids Help Phone have increased by more than 50 per cent since early March. Increased isolation, school cancellation and social distancing are just a few of the reasons youth are reaching out.

At the Never Dance Alone-a-thon everyone across Canada can dance in support of Kids Help Phone. Participants can record their dances and upload them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat or TikTok, using the hashtag #neverdancealone and tagging @KidsHelpPhone. Sign up as an individual or as a team with family, friends or co-workers.

A Facebook Live event takes place noon to 1 p.m. today. For more information, go to neverdancealone.ca.
