Saturday is the day that outdoorsy Greater Victorians can celebrate the Great Trail Cross-Canada along with about 200 other communities along the 24,000-kilometre connector.

The celebration takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional Park’s southern trailhead, off Humpback Road in Langford.

People can hike or cycle 2.5 km from the trailhead to a viewing platform and another half a kilometre to the 41-metre suspension bridge over the Goldstream River.

There will be treats and giveaways along with information about the Great Trail, Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional Park and watershed protection organized by the Capital Regional District.

The network of multi-use trails links nearly 1,000 communities, said CRD parks committee chairman Mike Hicks.

The trail includes a 15-kilometre section of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, from the Selkirk Trestle in Victoria to Veterans Memorial Way at Kelly Road in Langford, as well as 13 kilometres in the newly opened Sooke Hills Wilderness Regional Park.
