Wind and waves buffet a boat in Cadboro Bay in November. Officials have closed the beach after reports of a possible oil leak from a boat in the bay.

Cadboro-Gyro Park Beach has been closed until further notice because of what appears to be an oil leak from a derelict boat.

Saanich Parks and Recreation officials are working with the coast guard to assess the situation brought to their attention by local residents late Sunday.

During a storm on Dec. 5 a vessel washed up on the beach in front of Cadboro Gyro Park, according to a news release.

While no safety concerns had been identified at that time, this weekend’s stormy weather has prompted further precautions.

Local residents reportedly notified authorities of a fuel smell, and Saanich officials and other agencies are assessing the situation.

It was not immediately clear whether Saanich officials were able to contact the boat’s owner.

Salvage of vessels falls under the Canada Shipping Act. Unless given approval by the owner, or by the Receiver of Wrecks if the owner cannot be reached, local jurisdictions are not authorized to dispose of vessels that wash ashore.
