Brush fire quickly doused at Summit Park

Quick action by Victoria firefighters snuffed out a rapidly spreading brush fire at Summit Park Monday afternoon.

Battallion Chief Brian Elvedahl said the Victoria Fire Department received multiple reports of heavy smoke in the area of Cook and Finlayson streets about 4:30 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found a number of small fires spreading over an area the size of a large residential lot.

“It probably started in one spot and, being so dry, probably sparks just started a bunch of little spot fires,” Elvedahl said.

“So it was growing quite quickly, but once the crews got lines in place they knocked it down fairly quick.”

Elvedahl said it’s difficult to say what might have caused the fire. “Everything is so dry, a cigarette butt could start it or glass [and] the sun could start it,” he said. “It’s really a hard one to determine.”
