Victoria police reunited a four-year-old boy with his family members Wednesday morning after he snuck out a window while they were asleep and wandered away from home.

Police were called to the 800-block of Hillside Avenue about 9 a.m. by passersby who saw the boy wandering alone. They gave him a sweater to keep him warm and waited for officers to arrive.

Police realized the boy has special needs, but they were able to work with him to find out where he lived.

Police said the window the boy opened was missing a wooden dowel to make it secure, and no one in the family had gone to the hardware store for a replacement due to COVID-19 concerns.

Officers took on the task, measuring the window, purchasing the needed dowel and a padlock, and installing the items.

It was determined that the incident resulted from an unfortunate string of events and no one was at fault.
