Investigators have recovered the remains of a woman missing after a boat burst into flames early Saturday off Ladysmith.

The woman, in her 60s, lived on the boat with her partner, who was rescued from the fire by another boater.

Witnesses reported the fire to police just after 5 a.m.

“The investigators have determined that this was a tragic accident and there is no indication of criminality,” said Vancouver Island RCMP Corp. Chris Manseau.

The coast guard might recover what is left of the 50-foot vessel, which burned to the waterline.

Staff Sgt. Steve Perret, acting commander of the Ladysmith RCMP, thanked those who helped the man. “Their quick actions likely saved his life.”

The investigation has officially concluded.
