Salt Spring RCMP say they have located the body of a University of British Columbia professor who had been missing since Wednesday.

Sinikka Gay Elliott’s disappearance touched off a search by more than 100 volunteers. Her car was found on Wednesday night.

Police are still investigating, but they do not suspect criminality was involved in her death.

Elliott, an associate professor of sociology at UBC, had an “unwavering passion for both understanding and addressing longstanding systematic inequalities pervading society,” department head Guy Stecklov said in a statement. Her research focused on family, social inequality and social policy.

“Sinikka was an exceptionally skilled and deeply engaged scholar with a deep-felt commitment to social justice and equality for all,” Stecklov said.
