Saanich Pound inspectors issued a warning after a bear was spotted trying to get into a garbage can on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.

A Saanich resident managed to shoo away a bear before it got into his garbage Tuesday, and Saanich Pound inspectors say it’s a reminder for people to bear-proof their property as warmer weather approaches.

A resident of Goward Road near Prospect Lake called Saanich Pound inspectors around 1:45 p.m. after he saw a black bear attempt to get into garbage on the property. The resident yelled and chased the bear off their property.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service was notified.

Bears are in the process of waking from their winter hibernation, so they will be out foraging for food, said Saanich police Const. Markus Anastasiades, adding that garbage bins should be locked or kept inside a closed garage.
