B.C.’s Green Party is taking nominations in preparation for an upcoming provincial byelection in Nanaimo.

The deadline is Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.

MLA Leonard Krog, who is mayor-elect of Nanaimo, has yet to step down from his provincial seat but said he would do so if elected.

He will be sworn in as mayor on Monday.

A date for the byelection has not been announced, but Premier John Horgan has said it will be held before the budget comes down in February.

B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver said a Green MLA would “support good public policy, while holding the government to account for bad policy.”

The byelection outcome is critical because the NDP’s minority government is holding onto power only because it has support from the three Green Party MLAs.

NDP MP Sheila Malcolmson, who represents Nanaimo at the federal level, has announced that she will be seeking the B.C. NDP nomination for the byelection.
