A man with outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court Monday has been arrested by Saanich police.

Police were called to the 3500 block of Shelbourne Street, near Cedar Hill Cross Road, just before 11 p.m. Monday to investigate a parked vehicle believed to have been stolen from Esquimalt about an hour earlier.

While at the scene, a Saanich officer took note of a group of men walking nearby. A number of officers recognized one of them as Matthew Neely and knew there were warrants for his arrest.

Neely ran off, but was quickly caught and taken into custody. Charges against him include dangerous operation of vehicle, flight from police and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

He was due for a Tuesday court appearance.
