Victoria police arrested an Alberta man Sunday after a series of break-ins in which the thief was armed with an axe.

Police were called to Oak Shade Lane in Rockland about 10 a.m. for a report of an axe-toting man attempting to enter a home.

As officers began to search the area, they were approached by several residents who had seen a man running through yards and trying to get into houses.

The suspect eventually went into a residence on Richardson Street, which sent a woman fleeing outside. Officers, accompanied by a police dog, were able to coax the man out and arrest him.

Police discovered several homes had been entered and a number of items stolen, including prescription drugs.

It turned out the man was wanted in Alberta on warrants and had headed to Victoria, where he was sheltering in Beacon Hill Park.

Police believe several homes and outbuildings Sunday between the park and Rockland may have been hit.

People in the general area are asked to check their properties and let police know about any issues. Call Victoria police at 250-995-7654, extension 1, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
