All sailings on the MV Klitsa ferry between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay were cancelled Friday due to a problem with the propulsion system.

B.C. Ferries says a right angle drive on the ship is not working properly. The problem was discovered last night.

“It’s about a seven-hour job for crews to replace it,” said Deborah Marshall, spokeswoman for B.C. Ferries, in an interview this morning.

The vessel is expected to be back in service on Saturday. The ferry makes nine round trips each day and carries a maximum 20 vehicles and 150 passengers on each sailing.

With the Mill Bay ferry out of service Friday, people on the south Island wanting to go to Brentwood Bay could take the Trans-Canada Highway.

“We apologize to customers and commuters who use the route and we appreciate their patience,” Marshall said. “We don’t have another vehicle to replace it. Technicians and engineers are working hard to get the ship back in service tomorrow morning.”
