Saanich plans to return to the practice of having a full-time municipal solicitor after finding legal costs increased significantly when it eliminated the position in 2010.

Applications for the position, which will pay $138,700 to $162,150, closed July 14. While the annual legal costs since 2010 have varied significantly, they averaged about $325,000 per year, according to the district.

Chris Nation held the full-time position for about 25 years and has been on contract for two days a week, with other lawyers consulted as needed.

“I think with the ongoing modernization of the municipality, [we] need someone full time,” Mayor Richard Atwell said. “Last year’s bill was huge — over $500,000.”

Atwell said cost isn’t the only issue — he also wants to reduce the turn-around time for decision-making, and have access to in-house consultation with someone who understands local issues, rather than having to make appointments to speak with lawyers in Vancouver. He also likes the idea of keeping files on Saanich issues in-house.

The solicitor provides advice on the day-to-day operations and undertakings of the municipality.
