Almost 500 new units of affordable housing are coming to Langford and Sooke through the Capital Regional District’s Regional Housing First Program.

The program will invest $7.8 million for 130 units at 2762 Spencer Rd. and $7.2 million for 120 units at 832 Hockley Ave. in Langford. They will be ready for tenancy in 2020.

In Sooke, the purchase of two sites has been approved for 244 units to be move-in ready in 2021. There will be 169 units built at 2075 Drennan Rd. and 6418 Sooke Rd., with the program contributing $7.65 million, and 75 units at 6519 Throup Rd., with the program contributing $3.38 million.

The Sooke projects are in the planning phase to determine the conceptual design, engineering and land-use anticipated for the sites. An expression of interest will be issued to non-profit housing providers to operate the properties.

Twenty per cent of the units will have rent set at the provincial income assistance rate of $375. About half will have rents set near the market rate, and about one-third will be affordable units with lower rents.
