A $5.3-million contract has been awarded to build a retaining wall along a section of Highway 14, just east of Port Renfrew, that has been reduced to single-lane traffic since rainfall led to slope failure in November 2018.
Jacob Bros. Construction is scheduled to start work later this month and complete the project next summer.
Building the 220-metre wall is the first step in restoring two-lane traffic on the highway.
Work on the wall will mean overnight road closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., except for Saturday and Sunday. The closures will run from July to Nov. 30, 2020.
The second phase of construction in the area is then set to start in spring 2021 and will include repair of the road base along a 500-metre stretch of the highway.
Completion is expected in June 2021.
Overnight closures will also be needed in this phase, as well.
