4.9 earthquake west of northern Vancouver Island

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the west coast of northern Vancouver Friday evening. The quake struck at 7:14 p.m. around 130 kilometres west of Port Alice at a depth of eight kilometres. Earthquakes Canada said no damage is expected.

Earthquakes Canada said no damage is expected. Anyone who felt the earthquake is asked to fill out a questionnaire detailing the extent of shaking and damage. The reports help Earthquakes Canada determine how the area may respond to future quakes.

By Saturday afternoon, one person had reported feeling weak shaking and no damage.

On May 9, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit southwest of Port Alice, generating 10 reports of weak shaking.
