The fundraising campaign to help grieving parents by creating the Little Spirits memorial garden in Saanich for infants and lost pregnancies received a large contribution from the province this week.

The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development is providing $100,000 of the $295,000 needed for a dedicated site within the Royal Oak Burial Park.

Park executive director Stephen Olson called the contribution "a huge surprise."

"We did make a grant application but never expected that response," he said.

The grant is part of $135 million in gaming grants the province will approve during 2012-2013, the ministry noted.
