Iris died unexpectedly at home on September 7th, 2012. She is survived by her sister Margery Davies; daughter Christine (Kenneth, Amanda and Erika) and son David (Connie, Daniel, Aubrey and Jacob.) She was predeceased by husband Frank Powell Chalmers, (March 27, 1927 - February 20, 2002); parents Wyndham and Kathleen Davies; and brothers Douglas, Keith and Stanley.

Mom was an amazing woman, wonderful Mother, loving Grandmother, and a friend to many. Mom will be so very missed by all who knew her. She was a tornado of energy and was so strong and supportive! Mom had a fantastic sense of humour, amazingly quick wit and indescribable intelligence! Her sacrifices, generosity and good deeds touched so many people. If you were sick or in need of help she would be the first to arrive with a bowl of soup, homemade meal or a shoulder to cry on. Most anyone who visited the J.D.F. Seniors Centre knew Iris for her hours of baking. Mom we wish you every peace and the unlimited serenity that you so deserve. We love you so very much and think of you many many times each day. You touched our lives like no one ever will again. We miss you but know that you are in a better place and in the company of other great people especially your Mom, our Grandma and Great-Grandma Kathleen.

A celebration of Mom's life will take place for family and friends at the Juan de Fuca Seniors Centre on October 10th at 3: 00 pm.

Those we love don't go away,

They walk beside us every day.

Unseen, unheard, but always near,

Still loved, still missed and very dear

BODO, Isabel (Isabella)

Widow of the late Alexander Bodo, sister of the late Joseph (Jr.) Kormondi and cherished mother of Byron Alexander, William Andrew, and Susan Marie died peacefully in Victoria, Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 at the age of 88. She was born in Risce, Hungary, July 6th, 1924 to Joseph and Rebekah Kormondi. The family came to Canada in 1926 living in Niagara Falls and Port Colborne before settling near Simcoe to sharecrop tobacco in the late '30s and '40s. On graduating high school in 1942, Isabel worked in Hamilton as telephone operator until marrying Alex in July 1948. After the boys arrived in '49 and '51, the family ran a fruit farm near Beamsville on the Niagara Peninsula. In '57, they moved north to the mining town of Schefferville, Quebec where Susan arrived in 1958. The family returned to Niagara in 1960 to settle in Grimsby where the children were schooled. From the 19691984, Isabel worked as an RNA. As Alex suffered grave illness in the '70s and again in the '80s, she moved the household to St. Catherines and later to Victoria in 1985 where they lived until their respective ends. Beyond wife, mother and family bedrock, she is remembered for her love of music and literature, her joie de vivre, her wry humour, and her independent spirit. Her enduring curiosity about the larger world and adventurous soul begot a love of travel that began with a jaunt with school friends to New York City in 1942. From the late 1960s, she toured abroad to many locales. Just days before her passing, she remarked how thankful she was to have found strength to make her last grand voyage, a 2009 cruise accompanied by daughter Susan from Rio de Janeiro, around Cape Horn and home to Victoria with many stops.

She was cremated as she wished.

Mom, we sadly miss your loving smile and twinkling eyes.

(1940 - 2012)

Jim asked us to make his obit 'short and not sweet' - not an easy task. Born to Bill and Florence Carfra in Winnipeg, Jim went on to be the oldest Carfra ever to have lived (so far). Brother to Marg (MacLean) and Bob, he graduated high school in Montreal and then studied at King's College, Halifax and Queen's University where he received his law degree in 1962. In 1963, he married the love of his life, Pat (née Rowell). The two answered the call of the West and settled in Edmonton where Jim started practising law in 1964. There, he became dad to Neil and Jill (Barrett). In 1970, the Carfra family made a happy choice and moved to Victoria where Jim established a reputation as well-respected barrister, sessional lecturer at UVic and active member of the Victoria Bar Association. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1984 and, with Dean Lawton, in 1985 established the firm of Carfra & Lawton which is now one of the largest firms in the city. Throughout his legal career he mentored many a young lawyer by whom he is fondly and appreciatively remembered. The Carfras moved out of town to their dream home at Prospect Lake in 1974 where Jim and Pat have hosted their many family, friends, and friends-of-friends to dinners year round and for swims in the summer. Jim took great pleasure in seeing his four grandgirls, Michelle and Susy Carfra and Grace and Audrey Barrett, learn to swim in the lake even though he himself would never go in "unless the water is 86ºF or better". Jim was an avid reader, traveller, lover of the latest 'techie-stuff', and a keen walker with the Volkssport organization. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010. Ever a man of the times, he blogged on caringbridge.org about the highs and lows of the course of his illness and his life with cancer, using his own typical mix of humour, grace and candour. He and his family have been humbled and comforted by the many, many words of love, fellowship and tribute received throughout. Our deepest thanks go to Dr.Jim Stockdill, the Victoria Cancer Clinic and the V.I.H.A. community nurses. Those wishing to make a donation in Jim's name might consider 'Dying with Dignity' www.dyingwithdignity or the organizations above.

A memorial gathering and reception will be held at the University of Victoria Law School on Sunday, October 21 at 2 pm.

As a teacher, Jim (J.J., Mr.J.) directed award-winning choirs in high schools in Prince George, Nanaimo, Lake Cowichan, Brentwood College, Shawnigan Lake School, and at Cowichan Secondary from where he retired in 1988. Jim also founded successful community choirs wherever he went: the Cariboo Chorus in the 1950s, the Cowichan Chorale in the 1970s, and in 1983 he started the Concenti Singers along with his wife, Sheila, who still directs the group. In 2003 Jim received the Herbert Drost Award from the B.C. Choral Federation for distinguished service and support of choral music throughout B.C. Then in 1978 she moved to Northern BC with her soul mate, Aubrey, to start a new life. Hand in hand they ran their own business in Fort Nelson and later moved to Fort St. John. David was born in Edmonton, predeceased by his parents, George Sr. and Mary, his beloved wife of 59 years, Eleanor and his faithful companion, Duke. Dave and Eleanor lovingly raised their family in their Esquimalt home, remaining there for 44 years before moving to the Renaissance Retirement Residence. Dave and Eleanor travelled throughout North America on family trips, to many UOA conferences, and loved their vacations to the UK to meet extended family and explore family history. David loved a good party and with mom continually opened their home for the famous "Metcalfe" pool parties. Hospitality was extended to many by invitation into their home, to share a meal and lots of laughter. Dave always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. "What would you do if you couldn't laugh" was his favorite line. Dad with Mom built a beautiful life with their hands, their hearts, their love and their faith. We are blessed to have such loving and supportive parents. Special thanks to the kind and caring staff at Victoria General Hospital, 4South, the Renaissance and the Paramedics that attended to dad.
