RCMP have confirmed their initial assessment that the cable to the Sea to Sky Gondola was deliberately cut.

The gondola has been closed since Aug. 10, when the cable and multiple cabins were found on the ground.

“Police have confirmed that the main cable was cut and that there are no other natural or mechanical reasons for the cable to have failed,” Squamish RCMP said in a statement.

To preserve the integrity of the investigation, no further details will be released, officers say.

The company has announced that it intends to reopen the gondola in spring 2020 and that it will be replacing the cable and all of the cabins.
