A man has died after shots were fired by police at a home near Mill Bay on Saturday.
Shawnigan Lake RCMP officers went to the home at the Cedar Creek Mobile Home Park to arrest a man as part of an assault investigation, CHEK News reported.
Officers entered the home shortly after noon and a man came at them with an “edged weapon.” They responded by trying to deploy a stun gun in an unsuccessful effort to stop the man, the RCMP said in a statement. The police officers fired shots and the man was struck. He was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.
No one else was hurt.
The Independent Investigations Office has been called to investigate. The provincial agency is tasked with reviewing deaths and injuries that involve police.
Neighbours told CHEK News that they heard several gunshots. A short time later, a person was taken out of the home on a stretcher.
